When a lizard loses its tail, or an octopus loses a leg, it can regrow another to take its place. For humans, that has not been possible. Yet with the cutting edge regenerative research and treatments conducted by Doctor Cameron Clokie, there are a few people who have managed to regrow lost bone tissue in his revolutionary new surgical practice.
Dr. Cameron Clokie is an accredited oral and maxillofacial surgeon, as well as a scientist and the CEO of Induce Biologics, Inc. After thirty years of academic and clinical dentistry, he retired from academics in 2017, but his legacy has changed the way many doctors and dentists will look at regenerative medicine.
He holds and has pending 25 patents in the US and worldwide for medical techniques and procedures. Much of his work centers around a specific protein, called bone morphogenetic protein, or BMP, which was discovered by University of California researchers in the 1950s. Dr. Cameron Clokie was the first to use BMP and other bone-growing proteins from within the bone itself to regrow lost bone tissue. Read more: Cameron Clokie Speaks to Regenerative Medicine
So far, the procedure has been tried successfully on eight patients in Canada. One of them, Peter Russel, went to Dr. Cameron Clokie in order to regrow seven centimeters of bone tissue that had been lost when a benign tumor was removed from his jaw. The surgery was successful, and while he requires a metal rod to perfect the jaw’s movements, it is a definite breakthrough compared to earlier treatment options. The process uses adult stem cells, which are encouraged to become bone tissue. By using his technique, Dr. Clokie is able to convince the stem cells to continue growing the way they would when the patient is a baby and the bones are growing into adult size. The resulting jawbone is identical to the original, and grown exactly the way it had from an embryonic bone state.
In addition to his clinical work. Doctor Clokie has been a prolific author and presenter at national and international conferences on the frontiers of bone regeneration. The goal is to one day have more stories like Peter Russel’s.
